Matterson, lost. 61b. (46sec), 2; Theo. Towns, 11st. 41b. (60 sec), 3; R. Arust, world’s coampion, scratch, was 4th.
Times: Winner’s, ibmin. 17 sec. ; Arnst’s, ibmin. i2sec. The others qualified to start — by virtue of being placed in the heats rowed on April 30—weic : W. Fogwell, ust., idsec.; A. O. Felton, i3st., 32. sec. ; S. A. Kemp, list., 36sec. ; Norman Towns, nst., 4osec, : N. A. Zeitsh, list., gbsec.
As anticipated, the concessions Arust had to make his opponents proved too great. The perfect smoothness of the water also militated somewhat against the champion, and in favour of the early starters, but Arust rowed a magnificent race, covering the mile in smm. 55sec., two miles in raiuin., and the full course miles, in 150011. icsec. The winner, F. Matterson, soon established a good lead, passing the mile three lengths ahead of T. Towns, with Arust last making up the leeway. The champion shot past Fogwell (the nearest man to him) at the Gasworks, and before reaching two miles overhauled Felton and Kemp. At Cabarita, F. Matterson led, Zeitch and T. Towns being four lengths away, and G. Matterson handy, Arust was fifth.
All spurted grandly at the finish, F. Matterson getting home two lengths ahead of his brother, who finished almost on even terms with T. Towns, Arust being a length behind Towns. Arust claimed a foul against Towns on the finishing line, but the claim was not allowed.
