MEMORIAL SERVICE.

PUBLIC MEETING. The meeting convened by the Mayor (G. H. Stiles, Esq.) to consider what steps should be taken on the 20th instant, the date fixed for the late King’s funeral, was held in the Council Chamber last evening. Those present were : The Mayor (in the chair), Revs. Messrs Woodward, Mairs, Mrs Stewart, and Messrs Speirs, Stewart and Gibbs. An apology for absence was received from the Rev Mr Aitken, who was absent from the district. The Mayor outlined what was done locally on the occasion of the late Queen Victoria’s funeral. It was unanimously decided to hold a memorial service on the 2cth instant in Victoria Park, or il wet, in the Public Hall. The following resolutions were carried : That the arrangements for the religious service be left entirely to the ministers Revs Woodward, Aitken and Mairs, with power to add to their number.

That a procession be formed, to start at the post office at a time to be arranged, and that an invitation be given by advertisement to all local bodies, societies and the public generally to join. That the Borough Band be asked to play and lead the procession, and that the headmaster of the State School be asked to arrange for the children to join the procession, and for the cadets to appear iu uniform with trailed arms.

That Mr Coley be asked if he would allow his lorry to be used for a platform lor the speakers at the Park, and that it be draped in an appropriate mauner. That the church and firebells be mufiled, and tolled at half-minute intervals, commencing at 2 o’clock, tolling the age of the King. That a committee consisting of Messrs Gibbs, Speirs, Stewart, and the Mayor be formed to carry out the arrangements necessary outside of the religious service.

That the Rev. Mr Mairs act as precentor on the occasion

A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
