TOWN CLERK’S REPORT.

At Monday night’s Council meeting the Town Clerk reported as follows :—“At the last monthly meeting of the Council I stated that I would ascertain the cost of screening limestone in borough yard and now beg to give particulars of same. Screened limestone originally cost the Council 6s per yard net in railway trucks at station, or 24s per truck (including railage), being 15s per truck for the material, 9s for haulage, or 3s 9d and 2s 3d per yard. Ordinary limestone at present costs xos per truck and haulage 9s, i.e., 19s as against 245, and from the eight trucks procured about four trucks of screened was obtained at a cost of Ss 6d per yard in the borough yard, so that it costs the Council 2s 6d per yard more now than formerly. The borough men are making good progress with the drains and owing to the spell of fine weather, are putting in really good work. If the weather keeps fine the work will be completed in a fortnight. Attached to this report is a statement of work authorised by the Council from which it will be seen that there is six months work to be done in rotation as authorised, and any new work for the men

cannot be undertaken for some months. In order to cope with the work to some extent, I have, with the approval of the Mayor put on a third man as it must be borne in mind that in addition to work authorised by the Council, the ordinary maintenance and care of the roads has to be gone on with, and this, in several cases is getting rather pressing. I would suggest that while the team is carting clay on to Cook Street extension it would be a good opportunity to get some for Futter Street, which badly needs blinding.”—The report was adopted.

WORK AUTHORISED. . Ladies' Mile and Robinson Street, footpath to be formed on south side from western boundary ; Norbiton Road, footpath to be formed on north side to Patrick Street (completed) ; all roads over one chain to be planted with ornamental trees (Clyde, Liddell and Park Streets completed) ; Avenue Road, footpath to be formed on north of Avenue from Main Street to Russell Street, and footpath on south side to be limestoned and tarred (limestoning completed) ; Cook Street, footpath to be formed on both sides from Main Street to Johnston Street ; Ravensworth Place, footpath formation and outlet provided for storm water ; Cook Street Extension, metal to be blinded with clay, sides of road where required blinded with turf and outlet provided from water channels (claying only done). All borough drains to be cleaned out. (If the weather holds this work will be completed in a fortnight). Russell Street, drain from bridge to fence line on south side to be piped with two-foot pipes and filled in.
