FOOTBALL.
The opening match for the Austin Banner was played at Sanson on Saturday, when the Albions (Foxton) defeated the local team by 30 points to nil. Albions played against the wind in the first spell, and compiled 13 points, L. Perewhiti scoring two tries, one of which W. Winiata converted. Furrie scored one try, which was also converted by the burly forward. On changing round after half-time, the Manawatu District team could not withstand the machine-like passing of the Albion backs. The ball was coming out of the scrum like a shot from a gun, and Osboldstone lost no time in feeding his backs. Almost every time the ball travelled right across to the wing threequarter, and sometimes back again, and these passing rushes ended in a score almost every time. In the second half, Dunn scored three tries and Furrie one, the latter try being converted by Winiata. The ex-Horowhenua rep. player also kicked a penalty goal. A feature of the game was the fine place kicking by Winiata, who converted four out of five tries, all from difficult angles, and two of them against a strong wind. For Albions, every man played really well, and have only to repeat their form in future matches to gladden the hearts of their followers. For Sanson, perhaps Burgess and Anderson were the pick.
After the match the Foxton boys were entertained to dinner at the Sanson Hotel, and at 7 o’clock left for home by special tram. A general meeting of the Albion Football Club is advertised to be held in the Family Hotel to-night, at 8 o’clock. As very important matters are to be discussed, a full attendance of seniors and juniors is requested.
