The Tennis Club’s euchre party and dance, to have been held on the 18th instant has, on account of the death of the King, been postponed. The date on which it will be held will be notified later, and fresh invitations will be issued. Mr Edmund Osborne, of Palmerston North, draper, calls attention to a special purchase of gents, overcoats and ladies jackets. As he was connected with the Foxton drapery for over a quarter of a century he will be known to many of our readers, and no doubt he is desirous that: his old customers should participate in the bargains offered.*

The Wellington Post states that the Hon. W. P. Reeves has resigned his position as financial adviser to the Government in London, The friends of Constable Sweeney will regret to learn that he is at present an inmate ol the Wellington Hospital, suffering from a severe attack of pleurisy. At the Wellington Supreme Court yesterday, Robert Anderson was sentenced to five years imprisonment on a charge of committing an offence against a young girl. A fire in Levin yesterday morning destroj r ed three shops in the centre of the town. The premises burned were those of P. Stevens (grocer), Wheatley (stationer), and Campbell (milliner). The origin of the fire is unknown. The shooting season opens on Saturday, but as far as this district is concerned it is a close season for native game, as according to a notification in the New Zealand Gazette only imported game may be shot in the Wellington district, which includes Foxton.

In a boxing contest at the Gaiety Athletic Club, Sydney, on Tuesday night, C, Robertson knocked out E. Cliburn. The latter’s head struck the floor, and he was removed to the hospital, where he died in an hour. His neck was broken.

Mr W. E. Bullard, saddler and harness-maker, inserts a notice thanking his numerous customers for the generous support accorded him in the past, and announces that he has just opened up a consignment of harness of all descriptions, horse and cow covers, etc., direct from the makers, of which inspection is invited. At the Public Hall to-night, Messrs Dickerson and Hopkins will submit a first-class programme of moving pictures. This firm have one of the latest machines, and the pictures to be thrown on the screen are all the latest procurable. The prices of admission are 2S Si'J s. Before the entertainment there will be a fireworks display outside the hall. The special “Empire” and “World” issue of the Amateur Photographer and Photographic News, published on March Bth, is a remarkable production, and one that no amateur photographer should fail to obtain. It is full of fine pictures on art paper, printed in two colours, and contains a mass ot practical, useful and elementary articles for all camera users in all parts ot the world. Particulars of cash prize competitions and items of interest for all who are photographers or interested in photography, both elementary and advanced, will be found in this notable number.

There will be given this evening in the Presbyterian Church an interesting and instructive lantern lecture on China and the Chinese. The lecturer is the the Rev W. Mawson m.a., who has been living in China tor a number of years. The following facts will be illustrated : “Chinese scenes and life in Canton, and the Canton Villages," “Boat Life,” “Occupations,” “Method of Travel,” “Rice Growing,” “China’s Sorrows,” “Children at Work and at Play,” “School Life in new China,” “Missionaries and Methods of Mission Work in the Villages.” Mr Mawson is a New Zealander and is connected with the New Zealand Presbyterian Church Canton Village Mission. The views are wholly the work of Chinese artists and reflects highly on their ability to produce artistic work of a very high class. There will be no charge for admission, but a collection will be taken up on behalf of the mission. All are invited.
