NORTH ISLAND RAILWAY LEAGUE.
At a meeting of the Council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, held this week, a letter was received from Hastings suggesting the formation of a North Island Railway League, the objects of which would be to see that this island receives justice in the matter of railway expenditure in comparison with the South Island. The suggestion won the sympathy of the council, which decided to promise that if action were taken the Chamber would give such assistance as was in its power. We are not aware that the local chamber has been asked lor its co-operation, but if it is we feel sure the Foxton Chamber will give the movement its hearty and practical support. Such a league would act as a powerful lever on the Railway Department and could provide data in respect to opening up new branch lines, etc., that would take the Department years to collect. Further, if the league is formed this district could submit for discussion the important proposal of linking the Main Trunk line between Levin and Marton. By the way, the local chamber might discuss the forming of a closer lands settlement league lor this district.
