The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, April 23, 1910 LAND MONOPOLY.
At a meeting of the Otago School Cum m-Moners, held this week, a dismission took place on the question of laud monopoly or limiting the area that might he held by one tenant. The discussion arose out of a report on two runs, aggregating about 18,000 acres, the leases of both being held by Mr Pinckney, of Glenavy Station. It was stated that Mr Pinckney also held several Government leases in the neighbourhood, another run from the Commissioners, and some freehold laud as well. After discussion it was decided: “Thai the Government be asked to provide legislation early next session enabling the Commissioners to make the same provision for limitation of run leases to one man as obtain in respect to lands controlled by Waste Land Boards.” While not blaming Mr Pinckney from mopping up as much of the country-side as he can lay hold of, we do blame the Government for leaving a loophole whereby he can accomplish this end. This is another phase of the great laud question that requires looking into.
