THE NEW GOVERNOR.
The Prime Minister, Sir J. G. Ward, has received, through his Excellency the Governor, Ford Pluuket, the following cablegram from the Secretary of State for the Colonies:—
“ His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve the appointment of Sir John Dickson-Poynder, Bart., D. 5.0., to be Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, in succession to Ford Pluuket, K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O. “ His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve of the promotion of Ford Pluuket, K.C.M.G., K.C.V.0., Governor of the Dominion of New Zealand, to be a Knight Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint
George.” Sir John Dickson-Poynder, D.S.O', is the sixth baronet (the title was created in 1802). He was born in iB6O, and educated at Harrow aud Oxford (Christ Church). In 18S1 he assumed the name of Poynder on succeeding to his maternal uncle’s estates. In 1896 he married Anne, daughter of Mr R. H. D. Dundas, whose wife was ?. sister to Barou Napier of Magdala.
The new Governor has seen a distinguished service in the army. He was a subaltern officer iu the 3rd Royal Scots Guards, and served in South Africa with the Wiltshire Yeomanry, as major, in 1900 (Queen’s Medal, three clasps) receiving the Distinguished Service Order for gallantry iu the field.
In politics, Sir John DicksonPoyuder was formerly conservative in his views ; latterly he has been with the Liberals. He has represented the Chipperham division of Wiltshire in the House of Commons since 1892. He is a very wealthy man, and has only one child, a daughter. The following is a sketch of the new Governor, written from the Unionists point of view : “Sir John Poyuder DicksouPoyuder (nee Dickson) is one of those ’verts who drifted over to Radicalism. Only six years ago he ceased to be a Moderate representative ot St. George’s, Hanover Square, at Spring Gardens. He is a Wiltshire squire, with places both at Corsham and at Hilmorton, Caine. The latter belonged to his mother’s family, and, as heir to his mother’s estate, he adopted his maternal grandfather’s name, adding to it the baronetcy which he inherited from his uncle, Captain Sir Alexander Collingwood Thomas Dickson, R.N . in 18S4. His father also was a sauor, and a rear-admiral. He was educated at Harrow and Christ Church, and is a J.P. for Wiltshire. He was formerly a lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), and major in the Wiltshire Yeomanry, and is an hon. Lieutenant in the Army. He went out to South Africa with the Yeomanry, gained his D. 5.0., and won his election last time in his absence. He was born in 1866, and married a granddaughter of the second Lord Napier of Magdala.”
