ALLEGED LIBEL

Captain John Strachan, a wellknown master mariner, has commenced an action against the proprietors ot the Sydney Morning Herald claiming ,£SOOO damages for libel. The alleged libel is contained in statements said to have been made by Doctor Irmer, Consul-General for Germany, and published by the Herald on May 17 last. The article was headed “ Alleged Kidnapping.” and referred to the voyage of Captain Strachan in the ketch Envy, charging Strachan with recruiting natives of Tobi Island under promise to return them to their homes, vyhich promise, it is alleged, he failed to keep, The article also alleged that Strachan had used efforts to induce the Tobi Islanders to replace the German flag with the British. Strachan’s reply is a denial of the charges, He had taken Tobi boys for trips in the Envy of their own free will to get knowledge of the world, but had not kidnapped or recruited themHe also denies the flag incident.
