TOWN CLERK S REPORT.

At last night’s Council meeting the Town Clerk reported as follows :—'Robinson Street footpath is now finished and the street corners kerbed. Ttie foothpath in Purcell Street has been commenced, but owing to the continuance of dry weather the ground has got so hard as to be unworkable. However, it will now be gone on with and when completed the Avenue footpath will be put in hand. The very heavy rain at the first of the month was the cause of several slips and washouts, the most serious being that in Harbour Street, opposite the morgue, where a good lump of the bank slipped and fell on the river beach. The slip started about a yard inside the fence on the road line, leaving a dangerous hole. This has been filled up with soil taken from Union Street and a sprinkling of metal over all. There was also a bad scour at the bottom of Union Street on the incline leading to the flaxmills on the river bank. This has also been filled up, partly with coarse broken concrete and partly with metal from the borough yard and the whole blinded with soil. A fairly large slip also occurred in the Avenue drain in front of Charles Hood’s section, which has since been removed. The long spell of dry weather has caused some very bad holes in several of the borough roads, the continual traffic having gone right through the metal in some places and it was necessary to see to these after the rain before they got worse and they are now all metalled with gravel from the borough yard. During the month 45 yards of metal has been placed on the roads as follows : Harbour Street 4 yards, Union Street 12, Main Street x, Avenue 6, Russell Street 9, Saudon Road 12, and Park Street 1 yard. All drains to be cleaned out should be put in hand not later than the beginning ot next month, and the work will necessitate the employment of another man, as one man cannot put them through in the time required. I would suggest that the largest drain, that carrying the greatest amount of water be put in hand first, the Awahou drain, from its mouth to the top of the Avenue, then the drains feeding the same, Baker Street, Spring and Russell Streets, then Coley Street, No. 6 Line, Purcell and Union Streets and any smaller ones that may require attention. The report was adopted.
