PILOT'S EXPENSES.

At Tuesday night’s Harbour Board meeting, Mr Nash brought up the question of assistance to the pilot. He said that the amount for assistance was increasing every month. He asked what arrangements had been made in reference to the pilot engaging an assistant. Mr Stiles said that the pilot engaged an assistant as occasion required. Mr Nash said that it appeared the pilot was in the position of employing some one to assist him whenever he pleased. The assistance was now costing a great deal more than it was in the previous pilot’s time, and appeared to increase every month. The Chairman suggested that he pilot should supply details of , the work done by his assistant.

After some further discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr Gardener, seconded by Mr Wood, that information be obtained from Mr Lawton as to the necessity of assistance.
