HARBOUR BOARD CHAIRMANSHIP.

MR. HENNESSY ELECTED

At Tuesday night’s Harbour Board meeting, the chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report, took the opportunity of thanking the members for their assistance during his term of office. He did not intend to offer himself for re-election, as he could not devote the time to the position that it required. Further, at the present time he did not know whether he would again contest the mayoralty, and it he did not do this he would not have a seat on the Board alter next month.

Mr Wood said he regretted very much that Mr Stiles had decided not to offer himself for re-election. He had attended the meeting with the intention of moving that he be re-elected for a further term. He thought that a chairman should hold office for at least two years, as it usually took the biggest part of the first twelve months to get a thorough grasp of the position. Mr Stiles had done remarkably well, and he hoped that he would see his way to accept the position for the ensuing year. Mr Nash said he was sorry that Mr Stiles would not again accept nomination for the position. He eulogised Mr Stiles’ work during his term of office, and also referred to the valuable assistance rendered by Mr Moore, solicitor, and the the secretary. He moved that Mr Hennessy be elected chairman for the ensuing year and referred to Mr Hennessy’s past connection with the Board.

MrGardenei, in sicomling the motion, congratulated Mr Stiles on his work during the past year and said the Board would have a worthy successor in Mr Ilennessy. Mr Miles, before putting the motion, said that another reason why he had decided not to accept nomination as chairman for the ensuing term was in consideration of the steps taken by Mr Ilennessy in I lie formation of the Board, and he considered that Mr Hennessy had a claim on the position. The motion, on being put, was carried by acclamation. Mr Hennessy, after briefly returning thanks for the honour conferred on him, took the chair for the remainder of the meeting.
