WATER AND DRAINAGE SCHEME.
[to the editor.] Sir, —Dike many of your readers, I am much interested in the consideration of the water and drainage scheme now before the ratepayers, and after the very luminous exposition by yourself and one or two others ot that scheme, I do not see how anyone who considers the progress and well-being ot the town can fail to support it. But what strikes one most of all in connection with the discussion of this matter is “that certain councillors,” as alleged by Cr. Adams, “should express one opinion at the Council table and afterwards tell the ratepayers something different.” That, Sir, is a very serious charge to make against any public man, and one would expect a repudiation thereof if it is not true. The late Rev Joseph Parker d.d., had occasion once to deal with a similar situation and he said : “There is only one man” (that is, type of man) that we must get out of the way. He is a nuisance in all movements and in this particular enquiry he must be expelled from the ranks of honest men. I mean the man who writes one thing in private letters and another in newspapers; the man who tells me that he ‘loves’ the scheme and then does all in his power to thwart it; the man who says privately he ‘quite likes’ the idea and who no sooner gets into company then he says exactly the contrary, or acts the contrary which comes to the same thing.” ( ‘Mr Facing-both-ways” does no good to anybody.—l am, etc.. Honesty,
