Palmerston, Feb. 28

The local volunteer corps celebrated the end of the volunteer movement and the birth of the compulsory system this evening by a smoke concert, at which all the corps were well represented, and a number of veterans were also present. They marched in procession round the towni, and afterwards spent the evening iu toasts and music. Speeches were made regretting the death of the old system from a sentimental standpoint, but otherwise in favour of the new' system.
