At the Supreme Court to-day, Mary Hassill, a married woman, of about 30 years, pleaded not guilty to a charge of having used an instrument upon' herself with the intention of performing an illegal operation. A verdict of not guilty was returned, and she was discharged. A middleaged woman, named Martha Jane Maxwell, pleaded guilty to an indictment charging her with having, on November 6,1909, used upon one Mary Allen Taylor an instrument for an illegal purpose. After hearing evidence, the jury retired, and at 10.3 c p.m. returned, stating that they were unable to agree. An application for a new trial was granted.
