THE PAHIATUA SLANDER CASE.
SETTLED OUT OF COURT
When the Supreme Court resumed its sittings at Palmerston yesterday afternoon, Mr C. A. Pownall announced that a settlement had been arrived at in the case of J. C. Walsh, of Pahiatua, v. F. C. Tumor, of Eketahuna. The action was one for ,£5Ol damages for alleged slander, arising out of a dispute over a game of cards at Pahiatua.
Mr Pownall, for the defendant, said: “Speaking on behalf of my client, I have to say that he denies that he made or intended to make any accusation against Mr Walsh of cheating at cards, and regrets that any remarks he may have made should have been understood as conveying such a charge.” Mr Osborne Lilly, appearing for plaintiff, said: “On behalf of my client, I feel bound to accept Mr Pownall’s statement on behalf ol his client and do not therefore intend to proceed with the action.’’ His Honour, Mr Justice Chapman, said he was very pleased to hear of the settlement. The hearing of such a case could never do any good, and he was very pleased to hear of the manner of the settlement.
