CRICKET.
The Australian cricket team have arrived in the Dominion and yesterday concluded the first match of their tour, defeating the Wellington eleven by six wickets. The team is a strong one, and will give a good account of itself when the players become accustomed to the New Zealand wickets. It includes players who were members of the last Australian team that visited England and succeeded in retaining the “ashes,” namely Warwick, Armstrong, the Victorian giant, who is undoubtedly the greatest all round cricketer of the present day, Warren Bardsley, the brilliant young lelt-handed batsman, who holds the record of being the only player who has cored two centuries in a test match, Whilty, one of Australia’s most promising young bowlers, and Hopkins, who has toured England with the Australian team on three occasions. Outside of these “stars” the rest of the team are really good men who have all represented their State, and three of them were looked upon as “probables” tor the last English tour.
The team struck a bowlers wicket in their opening match. Wellington scored 107 and 208, whilst the visitors compiled 128 in their first innings and in their second obtained the number necessary to win for the loss of four wickets. They subsequently continued their innings and compiled 367. To-morrow afternoon United will journey to Himataugi to play Himataugi.
