UNVEILED IN ST. PAUL’S
CRYPT,
A DUKE’S EULOGY
London, February to
Two hundred people were present at the unveiling of the memorial panel to the late Premier Seddon in the Crypt of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Those present included (Mrs Morice a daughter of Mr Seddon), the Mayor of St, Helen’s, Mr T. Glover, M.P., lor St. Helen’s (Mr Seddon’s native town in Lancashire,) Lord Strathcona, the High Commissioner for Canada, the Hon. J. C. McCall, Agent-General for Tasmania, the Countess of Ranfurly, Major Robinson, and many New Zealanders.
Prior to the unveiling, the Duke of Argyll (brother-in-law of the King) read Mrs Seddon’s cablegrams, and delivered an eloquent eulogy. The Duke stated that the memorial was erecteu as a mark of affection for the man and respect for the statesman. Following Sir George Grey’s brave advice, the late Mr Seddon became the most trusted leader in all Australasia. He gave no uncertain voice when the call came to prove the union of the Empire, and New Zealand responded nobly, sending ten contingents to South Africa. His spirit still guides New Zealand’s councils, and New Zealand was foremost in the desire to be represented in our fleets now in the centre of the Empire he served. He concluded : “We honour his memory, and gratefully record his services for the King and country. We revere his example and deplore his loss.’’ The Hon. W. Hall-Jones, High Commissioner for New Zealand, on behalf of the people of New Zealand, committed the memorial to the Dean of Chapter’s charge. Archdeacon Sinclair, in accepting the charge, said that the memorial was an added treasure to England’s historical associations.
