MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
The regular meeting of the above was held at Sanson yesterterday. Present ;—Messrs J. G. Wilson (chairman), Henson, Dalton, Kendall and Barber.
Correspondence was received from the Treasury, notifying payment of subsidy 7s qd, and paid on tram £g is 6d. F'rom District Traffic Manager, undertaking to allow of tram being stopped near Foxton racecourse to discharge gravel. From Foxton Harbour Board, forwarding a resolution asking the Council to form a new road to Foxton beach.
The following rate roll transfers were agreed to ; —Jas. Svmons to F'. S. Easton, section 442-7 and 461-3, part of 430, Foxton ; J. Dixon’s estate to W. Hoppath, section 214, Sanson. It was decided to ask the Foxton Borough Council to contribute towards the cost of making a road to the Beach. The estimated cost of the work is £ 2OOO. The County Treasurer reported as follows:
General Account, dr. loan account, cr. £795, net debit balance Amounts available for expenditure to March 31 ; Sanson Riding Mt. Stewart Riding £ 22, Waitohi Riding Rongotea Riding Awahou Riding £s6, Whirokino Division Amounts over-expended: Carnarvon Riding Kawakawa Riding —The report was adopted. The following tenders for metalling contracts were accepted:— No. 83, E. G. McDermott, 3s 3d per yard ; No. 84, A. R. McNae, 4s 2d per yard. No. 85, T. Stuart and Sons, 2s gd ; No. 86, T. Stuart and Sons, 2s 3d ; No. 87, T. Stuart and Sons, 4s 1 id; No. 88, A. F. Fagan, 3s; No. 89, G. H. Mallett, 4s lod ; No. 90, R. P. Jensen, 4s gd ; No. 91, Boyle and Mathers, 3s Sd; No. 92, R. P. Jensen, 4s 2d. Contract No. 94 of R. Sexton’s for drain at gs per chain was accepted. Contract No. 93 was left in the hands of Cr. Barber. It was resolved to call for tenders for completing the drains in the Koputaroa drainage area, and the chairman and Crs Masters, Henson and the mover were appointed to accept tenders.
It was resolved on the motion of Cr Barber, seconded by Cr Dalton, to cancel Messrs Mitchell and Laiug Bros., contract for construction of drain Block I, Sandy Survey District and their deposit and money due be forfeited.
The offer of Messrs Cordue and Co., to carry on Mitchell and Laing Bros., contract at the amount of Cordue and Co’s, original tender, viz., 2s per chain, less amount paid to Mitchell and Laing Bros., £62 1 os, was accepted, on the motion of Cr Barber, seconded by Cr Dalton.
Accounts for Z 542 were passed
The Tramway Manager reported that the credit balance last month was although the expenditure included extra wages for men working at Himatangi curve. The goods traffic was satisfactory and the passenger traffic constituted a record, the amount taken being £so 16s gd. All the specials for the Bulls and Foxtou races were well patronised. The principal items of traffic were : Minerals 113 tons, merchandise 94 tons; timber 65,i00 feet, grass seed tons, wool 475 bales, horses 24. Cheap fares started on the Ist February, and time-tables have been circulated. At present the passenger traffic is very satisfactory.
Attention was called to the difficulty of collecting some of the tramway accounts, and it was decided to place the accounts in the hands of the County solicitor for collection. The amount due aggregates about
