THE SOUTH POLE.
New York, Feb. 3
The National Geographical Society of the United States received with acclamation, and referred to the Finance and Research Committee, Commander Peary’s proposal on behalf of the Arctic Club for an Antarctic expedition, the Club to contribute the steamship Roosevelt, conditional on the Society granting 50,000 dollars towards the expedition, and both institutions sharing the balance of expenses.
Commander Peary suggested that the expedition reach the coast of the Antarctic Continent in March, 19x1, at a point directly opposite Capt. Scott’s base. The American and British camps will then be 2000 miles apart- _ It is calculated that the BWf will be reached at the end of December.
Commander Peary is unable to conduct the expedition personally because the sledge work requires so much physical exertion that it will need a younger man.
