A YEAR’S GROWTH

The Registrar-General’s return showing the growth of the population of the Dominion during 1909 is published iu Gazette. He estimates the population at the end of the year at 982,923 exclusive of Maoris and Pacific Islanders, and 1,042,994, including those peoples.

Chinese are included in these M figures. The number in New* Zealand on December 31, 1909, was estimated to be 2824, of whom 67 were females. The population, excluding Maoris, increased by 22,281, or at the rate of 2.32 per cent* during the year. To this increase, excess of births over deaths contributed 17,562, and excess of arrivals over departures 4719. The birth-rate for the Dominion in 1909 was 27.29 per 1000 of mean population, and the death-rate 9.22, as against 27.45 and 9.57 respectively in 1908. The deaths in 1909 (8962) were less than the number registered in 1908 (9043) by 81, and the rate per 1000 tell from 9.57 to 9.22 (the lowest rate recorded since 1897). The number of marriages (excluding those contracted between Maoris) solemnised in 1909 is estimated at 8181, giving a rate of 8.42 per 1000 of the mean population, against 8339 and 8.82, the actual number and rate in 1908.
