LABOUR TROUBLES.

IMPRISONED STRIKE LEADERS.

Sydney,January 30

The successor to Mr Bowling has not yet been settled. The name of Mr Charlton, a member of the Assembly, is suggested. The Broken Hill Labour Federation carried a unanimous vote of sympathy with the imprisoned men. It was decided to communicate with all industrial bodies with a view to concerted action to demand the leaders’ immediate release.

A meeting of the Northern colliery proprietors has UK... held, it is supposed in connection with the Wages Board. The Board is now taking evidence. The Judge told both parties in unmistakable terms that they must come right iu or stay right out. The fact that the miners are now giving evidence, which a legal expert might put a different complexion on, has evidently roused the owners to reconsider their position iu regard to ignoring the Board. Grkymouth, January 31. A demonstration and mass meeting was held in Greymouth on Saturday evening as a protest against the effect of the New South Wales legislation and the imprisonment of Mr Peter Bowling and three other strike leaders. The State Mine Baud headed a procession through the town, and speeches were delivered from the band rotunda. The following resolution was carried unanimously : “That we, the workers of Grey and district, enter an emphatic protest against the brutal action of the Wade Government in making alaw which practically annihilates the liberty of free speech and the industrial organisation of the working class, and, further, if occasion arises, we will advocate a general strike throughout Australasia, making the injury to one an injury to all.” A collection was taken up on behalf of the strikers, women going from shop to shop with money boxes.
