FAMOUS MAORI CHURCH

BURNT BY AN INCENDIARY FIRE.

Gisborne, January 28

The Maori church at Te Arai, famous for the beautiful Maori carvings with which the church walls were surrounded, was destroyed by fire this morning. Incendiarism is suspected. The church was one of the show places of the district.

The carvings in the church were executed about 1830, and were removed to the building in 1890. Some of the slabs were 30ft long and 4ft 6in wide. The workmanship upon them was very fine. The Maoris of the district are said to be heart-broken at the loss of the building, which had so many old associations. The church was insured for in the National.
