HARBOUR BOARD CLERKSHIP.

[to the editor.]

Sir, —I noticed by the report of the Harbour Board meeting, which you printed in your last paper, that the clerk is to be given time to consider whether he will continue the duties. I should like to know on what grounds, or what particular virtues this gentleman possesses that he is entitled to the special patronage of the Harbour Board. He is already clerk to the Moutoa Drainage Board, a flax miller, accountant, &c. To such a busy man, surely /40 per year is a flee bite, which would be better appreciated by several others who, although not quite so clever as he may be, are able to faithfully carry out the clerical duties of the Harbour Board. Such bountiful treatment is calculated to create swelled head and officiousuess in officials. I would also like to ask, sir, whether the Board has ever recognised the services of Mr Rae-Howard, who worked so hard for the promotion of the Board and had to stand down for the present clerk ? Hoping you will publish this letter in full, and thanking you in anticipation, —lam, etc., Nuff Skd.

[i'o the editor ] Sir, —As stated in your last issue, there is to be a meeting called by the Borough Council of the ratepayers, veiy shortlv, to lake into consideration the highpressure water and drainage scheme of this borough, and as many of them have not seen the engineer’s report, or possibly read it, as I think it is an excellent, clear, and valuable statement, and of great credit to Mr H. W. Climie, may I be allowed to suggest to the .city..ia,ther&-that - they should, have, say, about one thousand of the full report in sheet form, and, if possible, a copy of the plan showing those portions of the borough scheme of water and drainage, and distribute them amongst the ratepayers interested, and this before the meeting. It would be a great pity to have this scheme lost through the ignorance of the people. Please find a corner in your valuable paper, and oblige. I am, etc., Ratepayer.
