THE BEACH ROAD.

DISCUSSED BY HARBOUR

BOARD,

At yesterday’s meeting of the Harbour Board, the chairman (Mr G. H. Stiles) referred to the present state of the road to the Beach. He said they should urge the Mauawatu County Council to take steps to raise a loan for the purpose of having a new road formed. At present there were 44 sections at the Beach with cottages erected thereon and he understood that the lessees of these sections were prepared to pay a fairly substantial rate. With the assistance of a grant from the Foxton Borough Council, which he felt sure would be voted, he was of opinion that sufficient revenue could be raised to provide interest ou a loan. He moved that owing to the almost impassable state of the road leading to the Beach that this Board urges upon the Mauawatu County Council to take steps to raise a loan for the purpose of having a new road formed having in view the fact that the rateable value has largely increased. Mr Hennessy, in seconding the motion, said he thought that perhaps the Board might be able to assist by making a grant towards the cost of the work.

Mr Wilson, who is chairman of the Manawatu County Council, said his Council was quite willing that something should he done to improve the road, hut they had no money. A large portion of the surrounding land belonged to Messrs Dalrymple and Wilson, and he understood they are quite prepared to pay rates. Of course the only way by which the work could be carried out would be to raise a loan and strike a rate over a special district as the majority of the ratepayers in the County would not derive auy benefit whatever from the road aud they could not, therefore, be expected to contribute towards the cost of same. He could assure the Board members that his Council was desirious of doing whatever it could to have the road to the Beach improved. The motion wes carried.
