THE HON. T. MACKENZIE
Thk Hon. T. Mackenzie;, (Minister of Agriculture, and Minister in charge of Tourist and Health Resorts, Commerce, and Scenery Preservation), who has been acting without pay, was elevated to full Cabinet rank on Wednesday last. His salary is £I,OOO per annum. No change in the allocation of portfolios is involved by the Prime Minister's decision, and there is no increase in expenditure upon Ministerial salaries, as the administration has been short of full-salaried Ministers since Mr A. W- Hogg's resignation on June iSth last. The Hon. T. Mackenzie entered Parliament in ISB7 as a represeuta live of Clutha. He represented New Zealand at the Centennial celebrations in New South Wales n 1888, and in 1899 went to Great Britain as New Zealand Trade Commissioner. For three years subsequently he represented various New Zealand exporters in Loudon thus gaining a valuable insight into the methods of dealing with colonial produce Twice he has served on Royal Commissions —in 1894 upon the Tariff Commission, and in 1901 on the Education Commission. Local affairs have received a considerable amount of attention from him, and his early explorations in the Milford Sounds, Te Anau, Manapouri, and West Coast districts were of considerable interest and value. For his contributions to the knowledge of the then almost inaccessible areas he was made a Fellow of the Geographical Society in 1898, He joined the Ward Ministry just abouttwelve mouths ago with the Hon. R. McKenzie, Hon. I). Buddo, Hon. A. T. Ngata, and Mr A. W. Hogg. At that time he was given control of the Industries and Commerce and Tourist Departments, and Scenery Preservation, his appointment as Minister of Agriculture being announced in May.
