PAHIATUA RACING CRUB. The summer meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club was concluded on Thursday in pleasant weather. The course was in perfect order, and there was a much more satisfactory attendance. Fields were again small, and there was a further dehcit in the amount invested on the totalisator compared to last year. At the meeting .£6129 was put through the machine compared to ,£11,747 at the last summer meeting, a falling off of £’5623. The total receipts from the bookmakers was close on £3OO. Results: —

MOSTLY ABOUT PAHIATUA. [“By Early Bird”] Pahiatua, on Wednesday, was anything but pleasant, rain falling throughout the day, which considerably affected the attendance and fiuancial receipts, though the second day turned out fine overhead, and a large crowd put in an appearance and saved the meeting from total disaster from a club point of view. Secretary Howley Drew was, as usual, courteous and thorough in the execution of his duties.

Arthur Oliver has been engaged to ride Ringdove in the Wellington Cup. Boanerges will go to Wellington Cup meeting to race in the classic events, and will be ridden Oliver,

Syd. Reid and Billy Young intend to place themselves at the service of owners at the Foxton gathering in preference to taking on the Wellington meeting. Windage is not much good, and they will be a bad lot indeed when the chestnut succeeds. He won from a couple of moderates first day, and failed miserably against Gold Bird and Nightmare on the Thursday. Gold Bird may make a decent hack hurdler, as prior to Pahiatua that nag had only been schooled very little over the “ bobs.” Still Fletcher’s charge scaled the hurdles in masterly style, and gave good promise. A nice looking sort of a chestnut, by Finland out of La Gloria, was made “ warm ” in the Scurry at Pahiatua, but ran very green and failed to gain a situation. Still she is worth keeping in mind for future events.

Aberration is a consistent sort, to be sure, and those admirers who stuck to him on Thursday were rewarded very handsomely financially. Even people on the course received a bit of a shock when his large dividend was announced. Fields in most cases were lamentably small. Still, some fair racing was witnessed. Hot favourites rolled home with monotonous regularity on the opening day, but the bookmakers must have got more than even over the downfall of some very hot orders on the concluding day. Blend was very hot stuff at Pahiatua second day, but his chance of success was spoiled by his being kicked at the post prior to the start, which took all the steam out of him. Blend has been up no time, but when properly seasoned should turn out a very good sort. Just take this tip in a quiet way! Riding mounts were scarce at Pahiatua when such tine horsemen as Teddy Lowe and Rowley Hatch failed to gain a berth in the rush to earn an odd pound or two. In the scramble for a crust, the Foxton lad (Roy Lambess) managed to earn in fees, the result of six losing jmouuts.

‘‘Early Bird ” is called to book for mentioning that Billy Young was paid to stand down off Waipaku in the Ashhurst Cup. Local sport, Toney Messena, refutes the statement, and in justice to him the denial is made.

Milan showed improved form on Bulls tunning by winning the big event each day in easy fashion. Certainly, the class of cattle pitted against Preston’s mare was not of a high order, but still the manner in which she cantered in at the business end suggests that she may gain a winning verdict in better company. Handicapper Henrys has let her off pretty light in the Foxton Cup with 7.13.

Marathon should have won the open Welter on Wednesday, but Cameron made a mistake going for a gap between Midian and Aberration. These closed on him, and he had to pull out on the outer. Then he was only defeated in a fast finishing run. On that form he was made the “pea” next day, but failed to run the second race like his first effort, and ‘ ‘ crash 1 ’ went the heads and their stuff. He has lots of pace, but one race seems about enough for him.

“ Horses for courses, and courses lor horses,” was once more evidenced at Pahiatua, when Debonaire won a hack welter event first day. It was just twelve months since that Debouaire, at the same gathering, secured a stake towards its oat bill. By the way, Debonaire is not much good, and, though Tilley had the chestnut as well as possible in condition, he was beaten pointless by a moderate in Chase Mab on Thursday.

Everybody has the habit of eulogising the successful jockey. Still, the fact remains that Arthur Oliver rode two “ loves ” of races on Strathmoira aud Milan at Pahiatua, when those nags won. He just got there by a neat margin each time, whereas a less experienced judge at the business may

have won by a chain. His fascinating seat, his incomparable coolness and judgment ot pace, and his steady and well manipulated pair of hands at his business stamps him as an artist of the first water, and lovers ot a perfect horseman will be pleased to note that the Feilding boy came through the Manawatu enquiry scathless. From the outset it was apparent that his mount, Kquitas, had no chance of defeating Sir Antrim, and why the enquiry was instituted seems a mystery. The bookmakers were tangled, the punters were tangled, and the odds were anyhow along the betting line over the Telegraph Hack on Thursday. There were only four runners, and when operations commenced the “heads” fell over themselves to hack Splash at evens and “odds on.” Then came money for Amaru, and later some for Afterthought. Sports thought hard, and the “books” sent Splash back a couple of points in the betting, and still there was money. The books were each making their own favourite, and each of the three ranked as such at different stages of the transactions, during which proceedings there held heaps of cash at a false price for the winner, who rolled home, much to the disgust of at least two bookmakers. Splash is very well just now, and handicapper Pollock seems to have let her off light at Trentham. Even the punter, when he does his money “ hard,” is not entirely devoid of humour. One of these, whose sense of wit is very marked, caused a titter of laughter on the stand on Thursday afternoon at Pahiatua, after Astrea was left hopelessly at the post in the final welter. Said punter had a parcel of coin on Percy Coffey’s mare, and, in sympathy with a total stranger alongside, who was cursing his bad luck at having lost a modest five bob on the gee-gee in question, he ejaculated: “Come away and have a cry !” This was too much for those in the “ know,” and the hilarious laughter which greeted the ejaculation (of the old sport’s pals), bespoke the situation in an instant. One lost his pounds in a jocular manner, while the other is probably still cursing his bad luck at “doing” his shillings.
