BREACHES OF FISHERIES ACT.

Three cases under the Fisheries Conservation Act were heard at the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court last week, which should be of interest to local fishermen. The offences were detected at New Brighton on December 12th. Two young men were fined for having taken soles less than nine inches in length, and they and four other men were fined for having dragged a net containing fish on to dry land. The latter is an offence under section 11 of the Act, which provides a maximum penalty of ,£2O for each offence. One of the fishermen stated that there was no clause to this effect in the regulations provided by the Customs Office, but the Magistrate assured him that the Act was definite on the point, and ignorance of the law was no excuse. They must take all fish out of the net before taking it out of the water.
