SCULLING AT WANGANUI.
ARNST WINS. Wanganu;, January 9. The final of the Wanganui first class sculling handicap took place on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine, and there was a fairly good attendance. Three steamers, each with a full complement of passengers, followed the races. The Consolation Race, which was rowed first, was the more interesting. The seven scullers were well together after the first quarter of a mile. Shortly after was pass’d, was leading, went under the right bank ahead of Dick Green aird Felton, the others being bunched under the lett bank. A great race resulted between Green and Kemp, but the latter held his own,'and won by a length. Bob Green close up. Time, The first mile was rowed in 6.15. The final of the Sculling Handicap proved somewhat disappointing. At the mile Haguey was leading Webb by eight or nine feet, and Arnst was half a length behind Webb, when the latter suddenly stopped. The strain of Thursday was evidently making itself felt at this point. Arnst, who never varied his long swinging stroke, gradually overtook Haguey, whom he passed at the mile and a-half, and led to the finish, winning by a little over a length. The first mile was covered in 6.17, the whole distance occupying 13.32. After the races had concluded, it was definitely ascertained that the cause of Webb’s stoppage was a general crack-up, brought on probably by the special spurt to catch Haguey after the mile. Webb has decided that he will do no more sculling for twelve mouths at least. At the end of that time, however, he will resume sculling if fie can get back to his old form. Haguey complains of being stale, and is going to have a couple of month's holiday, Mitchell will return to Sydney on Friday, and Kemp, the two Greens, and Felton will visit Rotorua, and leave New Zealand on Friday week. The settling-up for the race will take place on Monday night. Perth, Jan- 10. Arnst, the champion sculler, has cabled stating that he is willing to row Pearce, champion of Australia, on the Swan River for the world’s championship, ,£SOO a-side, and half the “gate.” He also requires ,£l5O tor expenses. The promoters consider the terms asked are too high, [Pearce recently defeated Day on the Swan River.]
