SYDNEY SURROUNDED BY BUSH FIRES.
A SUBURB DESTROYED. Sydney, December 14. There has been a scorching nor’wester raging all day. The thermometer in the city was two points short of xosdeg. There is a cool change to-night. The city is ringed with fires. One suburb, Cabramatta, has been destroyed. The Hirst sawmills were damaged, and also the railway line. The heat of the subsequent storm disorganised telegraphic communication. There are fires in many parts of the country, and a wide area in the Blue Mountains is burning. Several valuable residences were destroyed in the vicinity of Katoomba. Damage to the.extent of several thousands of pounds is reported. Yesterday’s heat has only been reached here on four previous occasions in December,
