FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (G. H, Stiles Esq.), Crs Coley, Stewart, Speirs, Gibbs, Adams, Robinson, Levelt ami Rimmer, Correspondence was read from the Foxton Racing Club, directing attention to the depositing of tow and flax cn the road near the railway windmill, and setting fire to same, and advising that the Club will hold the Council responsible for any damage done thereby.—lt was decided that the Racing Club be informed that the borough road referred to only extends as far as the railway crossing, but that enquiries will be made and a reply sent later; also that the flaxtnillers be advised that the depositing of tow, etc., on the waste area near the racecouise and railway windmill is prohibited. From the Friendly Societies Council, asking that a shelter of some description be erected in Victoria Park to take the place of the dressing shed recently destroyed by fire.—lt was decided to inform them that the Council regret very much that owing to hampered state of finances, it is impossible to erect a new shed this year. From Mrs Hudson, applying for permission to put pipes under culvert in front of her property. — Referred to the Works Committee. The Poundkeeper reported that during last month ten head of cattle, 29 horses and one donkey had, been 'impounded by the ranger, and driving fees amounting to ,£1 4s had been collected; one horse had also been impounded by a settler. It was decided, on the motion of Cr. Speirs, seconded by Cr Coley, that any person can graze cattle on the streets of the borough between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., but someone must be in attendance and responsible if any damage is done. —The above to be in force until the end of January. The question of who should be authorised to pass the asphalting ot the footpaths was discussed, it being suggested that the Town Clerk be authorised to do same. 'Cr Robinson said that it was a matter for the Works Committee. The Mayor said it was a matter that should be attended to at once, as the work was completed some time ago, and it was only fair to' the contractor that it should be passed before the footpaths were kicked about, Cr Levett: “If they won’t stand a little kicking they’re not worth passing.” It was decided that the Works Committee meet on Wednesday afternoon at three o’clock, for the purpose of passing the work. Mr E. J. Martin’s tender for the collection of the dog tax was accepted, the collector to make a house to house canvass. The tenders of W. Nye (carting), J, McKnight (ranging) and Mrs Ahern (lease of section 488) were accepted. Cf Robinson moved that the street gas lamps be tested to find out if they are 60 caudle power as required by the agreement. He said that he did not think that some of the lamps were ten candle power. Cr Coley: “Half of them are not one candle power.” The Mayor suggested that the attention of the manager should be drawn to the matter. No doubt that would have the desired effect. He was quite satisfied that the lamps were not 60 candle power. After some further discussion Cr Robinson consented to withdraw his motion, and the Town Clerk was instructed to write to the manager of the works, stating that the Council does not consider that the street lamps are 60 candle power, and asking him to prove that the Council are getting the amount of lighting that they should under the agreement. Accounts amounting to 18s 5d were passed for payment.
