HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A well attended meeting of members of the local Horticultural Society was held in the Council Chamber last evening. Mr Alex. Speirs (president) occupied the chair.

The Treasurer submitted a statement of the finances which were considered very satisfactory, and accounts were passed for payment. A lengthy discussion took place in reference to the awarding of special and points prizes for cookery. As no protest had been entered in accordance with rule 12, it was decided to allow the matter to stand as awarded. Mr Galland called attention to the fact that the Moutoa school children had been deprived of competing for Mr » Newman's special prize for children's gardens. The schedule distinctly stated that the prize was for children's gardens, and the school plots should not have been overlooked by the judges. He hoped this would not occur next year.

Several others spoke of the misleading manner in which the catalogue had been arranged and it was decided to thoroughly revise it and to refund the entrance money to Mr Galland. The question of holding an autumn show was discussed, and it was decided to hold it about the middle of March next. It was decided that the Committee meet next Tuesday evening to draw up a schedule for the autumn show, and to submit same to a general meeting of members to be held on Thursday evening next in Mr M. Perreau's rooms,

Notice of motion was given to alter the financial year from January to May, in order to give members the privileges of the autumn show.

Notice of motion was also given by Mr Galland to make theentrance fees as follows: 6d each entry for prizes under the value £t, and is for prizes in excess of that amount; exhibits for exhibition only, free. Several names were added to the Committee, and other minor details discussed.
