CATHOLIC BAZAAR.

In opening the above bazaar last Wednesday, the Rev. Father Cognet said : In the absence of a better “gun” I had at the request of the Rev, Father Kelly, to declare this bazaar formally open. He thanked them for their attendance that evening and he welcomed them to the opening. He also thanked them for the help that had been received from outside denominations, also for sending the children to take part in the dances, ■ sending girls to canvass, and rendering assistance in many other ways. In looking round the stalls we see the great pains that have been taken, and see how appropriately the stalls are named. This tells us there is to be a double splash—one on the river, and one here. It remains to be seen which will be the greater splash. In two months’ time —and scarcely that — the bazaar had been worked up. It speaks very creditably for those who organised and worked for it, and they have worked wonders during those two mouths. As I am personally concerned I wish to say how delighted I am over the goodwill displayed by all, I am certain that everyone who throws in his shilling will get good value for the investment. Everyone cannot pretend to be the lucky winner ot the wardrobe or the side board, but there is one thing certain, everyone who will have helped will be satisfied with the thought that he or she has helped a great and noble cause. Owing to the increase in your town and district, said the speaker, has been necessary to have a resident priest, and here he is among you. Wise as Foxton people are, they have prepared a nest for their priest. You know that nest. Owing to the efforts of the Catholic people here in Foxton, this event together with another similar event, will free the Catholic body from debt. And now, while I declare this Foxton Aquatic Bazaar open, I would exhort you to put on your best smiles, and when you see the girls approaching you, also with beaming faces, do not be afraid to put your hand in your pocket. Give away your spare cash. I will do so, and fully trust you will do the same, I now invite you to grant us your generosity. I feel confident from the experience of the past that the bazaar will meet with a large amount of success. Ladies and gentlemen, I now declare the bazaar open and invite those who are helping to work with great zeal. (Applause). There was a splendid attendance at the Acquatic Bazaar last night, and very good business was done by all the stall-holders and their assistants. The refreshment room also did a big business. At 9 o’clock Dr Adams, President of the Athletic Club, presented the handsome silver cup awarded by Mr Messena, and competed for at the Gaslight Sports, to the winner, Hagney. The following is a result of the raffles: — Lily cushion, Mrs Sullivan ; pastel painting, Mr N. Martin ; white cushion, Miss Henderson ; sunflower cushion Miss Avis Dudson ; red cushion, Mrs Ahern; poppy painting, Mr P. Henuessy ; tea cosy, Clifford Podmore; painted cushion, Roy Coley ; lily cushion, Mr Messena ; carved coal vase, Miss K. Smith ; tea tray (hand painted), Mrs E. Dndson ; oval mirror, Mr H. Flint; fire screen, Mr Howard Mitchell; ribbon work cushion, Mr A. Evans. Nail driving asd guessing competitions were got off for a number of other prizes including dolls, ferns, palms, vases, flower bowls, paper spills. The beauty prize, a gold and greenstone brooch given by Mr J. Golder, was awarded to Miss Lambess; this prize went by nomination. Another beauty competition will be conducted.to-night but in a more novel manner. A big crowd is expected tonight, as the management are offering a special inducement by making each visitor a present of a ticket in the drawing for the handsome carved sideboard.
