MINE DISASTER.

FOUR HUNDRED MEN entombed.

New York, Nov. 15

A fire in a bundle of hay, which smouldered until it broke into flames, caused the mine explosion reported at Charry, Illinois. Of the 434 men below, mostly Austrians aud Italians, 30 near the main shaft escaped. Two hundred retired to the furthermost end of the galleries, and it was feared early in the day that they had perished with the rest. The flooding of the pit was impossible, and with the hope of checking the flames the managers closed the mouth of the shaftSix would-be rescuers were suffocated, and later two volunteers wearing oxygen helmets, tested the temperature at a depth of 380 feet and found it nearly normal, indicating that the fire was then extinguished. There is some hope, though slight, of effecting a rescue of the imprisoned men. SIGNALS FROM THE ENTOMBED. New Yorx, Nov. 15. Watchers at the Cherry pit mouth heard muffled reports, and it is believed the entombed men are firing signals. It is impossible to re-open the mine before Tuesday.
