EDUCATION BOARD.
ORDINARY MEETING
(By Telegraph—Special to Heraed).
Wanganui, This Day
The ordinary meeting of the above was held last night. Present: Messrs Pirani (chairman), Aldridge, Bennett, Dixon, Fraser, Purnell, and Spurdle. Leave of absence was granted to Mr D, H. Guthrie, M.P.
On the motion of Messrs Pirani and Fraser, it was resolved that the Minister’of Education be asked if it is intended to make provision on the Supplementary Estimates for the continuation of the special grant of gd per pupil to School Committees, which does not appear on the Education estimates, as, if not, a great injustice will be perpetrated to the School Committees.
Mis Howie, of Taikorea, wrote applying for a transfer. The Education Department, in reply to a request, declined to make a grant for equipment of cookery classes at Foxton, on the ground that former technical classes were poorly attended. The Inspector’s report on the Foxton School showed that good progress was being made and better results were to be looked for in the future.
It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Pirani that, considering the urgent requirements in connection with school buildings and residences in the backblocks, for which the Education Department have refused to grant money, this Board considers it very unfair to spend money on free school books for the benefit mainly of pupils in the larger centres.
The financial statement showed that there was a bank overdraft of amounting to 12s 2d were passed for payment. The next meeting ot the Board was fixed for the gtb December. Lady Plunket has consented to present the prizes at the Girls’ College on the same date.
