ATHLETIC CLUB'S SPORTS.
KING’S BIRTHDAY
The chief local attraction for pleasure seekers on the King’s Birthday is the local Athletic Club’s annual sports gathering to be held in Victoria Park. The Committee have spared no effort to make this year’s meeting the most successful and interesting yet held, and they expect that there will be a record attendance. The entries received for both the running and cycling events are most satisfactory and include some of the best men in the Dominion, so that some good racing is certain to be witnessed. Among the nominations received for the half and one mile flat races is that of Alick Campbell, of Hawke's Bay, undoubtedly the finest one mile runner in the Dominion. The entries in the cycling events in*
j elude such good performers as A. !E. Parkes and Rube Jones, and among the sprint runners who will be competitors are L. Alzdorf, J, Berry and J. H. Barry, who have been running very well for the last couple of seasons. Alzdorf, however, seems to be rather harshly treated by the handicapper, and can hardly be expected to win from the marks he has been allotted. If any, the event he should be iu the running in, is the 220 yards in which he appears to have been better treated than in the others. Besides the running and cycling races a number of fancy and novelty events have been included on the programme, which should keep the spectators both amused and interested. The Committee have arranged for special trains from Feilding and Palmerston North and also for a tram from Pukenui and Sanson. The Foxton Borough Band has been engaged to supply the music during the day. The catering arrangements are in the hands of Messrs Evans Bros., which is sufficient guarantee that the visitors wants in this connection will be well looked after. The first race, the local bike, is timed to start at it.3o a.ra. Given fine weather there should be a record attendance this year. In the evening at the Public Hall the Club’s Amateur Dramatic Society will present, for the first time in Foxton, that sensational four-act drama by Mr Tom Taylor, •‘The Ticket-of-leave Man,” and the trophies and prizes won during the day will be presented to the respective winners by his Worship the Mayor G. H. Stiles Esq.
