PROHIBITION.

Melbourne, October 26

At the annual Inter-State Conference of the Federal Diceused Victuallers’ Association, the President, in the course of his address, said that notwithstanding the prohibition laws in New Zealand, and because of them, there was an ever increasing flow of liquors into dry districts. The amount of liquor per head, consumed in the Dominion, was on the increase. Crime also showed an upward tendency in prohibition towns.

[ Asked for a comparison of ! English with New Zealand women, Mr Foster Fraser said that the physique in New Zealand was very good and that on the whole there was a better level of excellence, taking them all round• The types of women that prevailed in the manufacturing towns in England, women horn and brought up under wretched conditions, did not obtain here at all, and, of course, it could not be expected that the very graceful and aristocratic type could be found in a new country. He had been at a ball iu Dunedin, and he was much struck with the fine physique, and the English appearance of the young women. The climate of the Dominion being more like England than Australia, it had the effect of making New Zealand women very robust and fair; while iu Australia, the girl developed sooner, with almost Eastern rapidity, and the climate, which was like that of Italy induced a certain languor and delicate appearance in the women.
