A SERIOUS CHARGE.

At Levin on Tuesday, Edgar Joseph Mercer, who had been employed as clerk at the Railway Station, was brought before Mr W. C. Nation, J.P., on the information of Detective Lewin, and charged with, at Levin on divers dales, October the 25th, September and October, iqoq, while employed as a clerk in the New Zealand Govenment Railways Department, receive the sum of about ,£3B 18s 8d on terras requiring him to account for the same to the Department, and did fraudulently omit to account for the same, thereby committing theft. Accused applied for bail, and sureties were fixed, accused in and two sureties of each. The case will be heard by the S.M. on 4th November. Bail was not forthcoming and accused was sent to Wellington.
