UNDESIRABLES.
At the Palmerston Police Court yesterday two men named Claude Retter and Charles Cannon, alias Cripps, alias Watson, were brought up ou charges of being idle and disorderly. Evidence by Detective Quirk was to the effect that Cannon had done no work for three months, while his letters showed that he had been in correspondence with notorious characters in other parts of the Dominion, He also produced a letter from accused to one Jas, Riley, whom witness had arrested at Rongotea on ■ a charge of theft at Auckland. It had been written while accused was at Shannon and contained the following sentence: “This is the place for the likes of you and me. There are drunken men lying about all over the place. About 300 men get paid 011 Friday, and they have about ,£SOO between them. So, if you were here, we would do nothing.” Accused was convicted and sentenced to three mouths’ imprisonment. Claude Retter, who was also charged with vagrancy, pleaded not guilty. A sentence of three months’ imprisonment was imposed. In the afternoon Reiter was charged with perjury in giving evidence in the case against him in the morning, and remanded till Monday. Charles Cannon was further charged with theft from the dwelling of George Hansford, of Palmerston, about August 12, of goods and clothes to the value of £’]. He was also remanded to appear ou Monday.
