MINISTERIAL VISIT TO FOXTON.
Wh received a message yesterday to the effect that the Hon. Mr Millar, Minister for Railways, accompanied by Mr Newman, member for the district, will visit Foxton on Saturday, October 30th, for the purpose oi inspecting the Harbour Board’s endowments, and the Minister has also consented to receive deputations. An opportunity will thus be afforded the Board to put its case fully before the Minister. We may mention that the Hon. Mr Millar is not ignorant of matters concerning the local port. It was he who suggested to a deputation, which waited upon him in reference to river erosion at Duncan’s Bend, to form a Harbour Board to control the port. He subsequently listened to the arguments of a large deputation before the Bill was drafted, and, as Minister of Marine, was most sympathetic and cheerfully granted the Board its present endowments. The Hon. Mr HallJones was then Minister for Railways, and strongly refused to hand over the wharfages without which the Board cannot hope to improve and thoroughly maintain the port. Since the Board has been constituted the Hon. Mr Millar has succeeded the Hon. Mr Hall-Jones as Minister for Railways, and it now rests with the Minister for Railways to bring to a successful issue what he happily suggested — a Board to govern the port. Mr Millar’s promised visit to Foxton is fraught with the greatest importance to the port, and we feel sure it will result in his making a very important pronouncement in respect to wharfages. That Foxton will extend to the Minister its best hospitality we have not the slightest doubt, and the citizens will fall in with any arrangements suggested by the Harbour Board and Borough Council for the entertainment of the Minister.
