FARMERS’ FREEZING WORKS.

The meeting convened by Messrs J. Balsillie and J. Wingate of those interested in the formation of Co-operative Freezing Works for this coast was held at Palmerston on Thursday. The attendance was small and nothing definite was accomplished. Mr Balsillie (chairman) suggested that those present should form themselves into a provisionary directorate, and send out canvassers into the neighbourhood, who would visit all the farmers large and small, and would receive 2 per cent of the shares which they obtained. A copy could be procured of the amended rates of the Wellington Meat Company, who had lately started freezing works in the Wairarapa. They now had about in view, being the value of the shares held by local farmers in the Wellington Meat Company, and the other being those shares added by Mr J. Wingate’s canvass.

Mr J. Morrinson suggested making overtures for purchasing the Tongburn Freezing Works.

The Chairman said as soon as they had promised 2000 shares of £5 they could register a company and start to work.

Mr J. Moninson said that the veutu re would prove a failure were it not run on co-operative lines. He had thought Foxton an ideal place for freezing works, but now favoured Long burn. Palmerston would become a large town, and would be easily able to use up the rejects. Mr J. Balsillie then read the articles, memorandum, and prospectus, of the Wellington Meat Company. In answer to a query Mr Balsillie said that they would soon get word back as to the price of the Longburn works.

It was decided to elect the following provisional committee with power to act and add to their number, while awaiting the reply from the owners of the Longburn works: —Messrs J. Balsillie, J. Wingate, J. Morrinson, P. T. Faire, A. Mathieson, H. T. Flyger, D. Rowlands, W. Woodsworth, H. Bowater, and C. Manna.
