TOWN CLERK’S REPORT.

The Town Clerk reported at last night’s Council meeting as follows :

The whole of the loan borrowed for the formation and metalling of Futter, Gladstone, Heta and Riddell Streets and Ravensworth Place has now -been expended and there has been paid out of the general account the additional sum of ,£B6 9s 2d to complete same.

A start has been made with formation of the footpath in the Radies Mile, the completion of which has been delayed owing to the roadmen having to remove the surplus spoil from the Main Street; the work of the two horse team with scoop was notassuccesslul as anticipated, and I am of opinion that the roadmen could make a better job with a cart (when necessary) after the ploughing was done. Mr Sherratt, the contractor for grading and asphalting the footpaths, has now roughlyjgraded the lull lengths on both sides of Main Street, except one or two small places, and to-day starts laying the asphalt, the gravel for this work is now coming steadily forward from Ashhurst, and is a good sample.of what was ordered. The carting of this metal was offered to a contractor at is id per yard. He refused the work saying it was too little, so it was decided to put on the Borough carts, with the result that it has cost only £3 6s 6d to cart 80 yards, including labour of filling, being at the rate of xod per yard as against is id refused by the contractor. The surplus spoil from the footpaths in Main Street is being used to blind loose metal on near-by streets and io fill up holes where necessary and where the least amount of carting is incurred. The report was adopted.
