BURNED TO DEATH.

Chkistchukch, Oct., 3

Mr L. Thos. Paintou, 72 years of age, employed by Mr Henry Nuuweek, fruitgrower at Papanui, was burnt to death last night. It appears that he lived in a tent at Nunweek’s orchard and was last seen alive at 10,30 o’clock on Saturday night when he had a bottle of whisky in his possession, but was perfectly sober. About 9.30 o’clock this morning it was discovered that the tent had been destroyed and Painton’s charred remains were found among the debris. It is supposed that the fire was caused by a candle igniting the bedclothes. It is believed that deceased’s wife and family reside in Dunedin.
