YESTERDAY’S BY-ELECTION.
The electors did not evince a great deal of interest in yesterday’s poll, as out of a roll number of almost 700, only 263 votes were cast. The different candidates were about among the electors during the day, working quietly, but there was not the Same eagerness on their part to bring voters to the poll, as was shown by the candidates at the general municipal election in April last. Immediately after the booth closed at seven o’clock, a crowd gathered to hear the result, which was decland by the Returning Officer, Mr Alf. Frazer, at about 7.35 p.m., as follows : Stewart, Washington Smith 129 Dalhousie, Richard Heron 82 Chrystall, John 4 s Informal 4
. Immediately after the declaration of the poll, the newly elected Councillor returned thanks for the position in' which he bad been placed. He said he would do all in his power to push the town ahead, and favoured progress ou sound lines. At the invitation of one of the crowd, Mr Stewart was accorded three hearty cheers. The two defeated candidates also returned thanks, and stated that they would be pleased to again offer their services to the burgesses at a future election.
