FRIDAY’S ELECTION.

[To the Editor.]

Sir, —Voters in this borough should satisfy, thetuselves as to the mental stamina of the men who have been nominated for the vacancy on the Council before giving their votes. The case of the street (or rather, the paddock) hi which I live may serve as a horrid example of how promises made before election, are shelved vyheu once the seat has been obtained. The only outlet to this street (?) at the time of writing is oyer a sandhill so difficult of negotiation that the nightsoil cart cannot reach the five houses which comprise one side ot the alleged street. Hence the dwellers therein have to act in direct contravention of the By-laws. An outlet has, I underderstand, been offered by Mr Brewer, at a fairly reasonable price, but notwithstanding the fact that four of the Councillors now sitting obtained our votes on the distinct understanding that this matter would' be attended to, nothing has been done. One owner of a section who would have built, has given up the matter in disgust, and his plot is now for sale—-at a lo'ss! Should Mr Brewer decide, as he may do at any time, to build on his land, the Council will be faced with the alternative of clearing away the huge sandhill which represents the Union Street end of Brown Street, a feat which, to judge by the price paid for the small cuttings in Fuller Street, will cost them some hundreds of pounds! It is small wonder that there is a vacancy on the Council with the present system obtaining, and I can only hope that whichever of the candidates is elected, he will be able to get something done for the unfortunate ratepayers who have houses, and no roads wherewith to reach them.—Yours etc., “ Reeve Street.”
