SLIPS IN MANAWATU GORGE.

TRAIN SERVICE INTERRUPTED. - Palmerston N. Sept. 20, Heavy rains have fallen to-day, but especially on the watershed. The afternoon train from Woodville got through, but, after it had passed, there was a big slip in the middle of the Manawatu Gorge, which came down in the midst of such heavy rain that the men were compelled to leave it. The train, which should have reached here from Dannevirke, was, therefore, stopped at Woodville, and the train from here to Woodville returned from Ashhurst, as it was impossible to tell the extent of the damage. At present it is not known whether communication can be restored by morning- The slips are too heavy to permit of passengers being transferred from train to train.
