A special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night, for the purpose of considering the sale of surplus areas in certain streets of the Borough, and to make special order re same, and further consideration of regrading the Main Street footpaths, and general. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles, Esq.,) and Crs Rimmer, Speirs, Ross, Levelt, Gibbs and Adams.

The following special order in reference to the sale ot portions of certain streets was passed : 1 ‘ That whereas Thynne Street, Reeve Street and that portion of Robinson vStreet from Easton Street to the western end of Robinson Street each one and a-half chains in width, and as one chain width is ample and fully sufficient for the purpose of the above-named streets and the remaining part thereof is not required for public use, the Council sell such part to the owners of the adjoining lands, tor a price to be fixed by a competent valuer, or otherwise deal with it in accordance with section 182 of the “Municipal Corporations Act, 1908.’’ In reference to re-grading and asphalting footpaths, the Mayor said that a tender from Mr P. Sherratt, which should have been received at the last meeting had since been received. The tender was £4. per chain for regrading and ashphalting the roltlootpaths, and £3 P er chain for 6ft portion. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Gibbs, seconded by Cr Ross, that the motion passed at last meeting re re-grading, tarring and sanding of portion of Main Street footpaths by day labour, be rescinded and that Mr Sherratt’s tender for asphalting be accepted for both sides of Main Street. A letter was read from Mr G. Brewer, withdrawing his offer of sale of land for the purpose of making a street to connect Johnston and Reeve Streets.—Received. The Secretary ot the Foxton Gas Works Proprietary wrote in reply to the Council’s complaint re street-lighting, expressing regret that the lighting was not proving satisfactory, and stating that the lights had at times been tampered with, and that they had communicated with the police on the subject, also that arrangements had now been made for the installation of an automatic controller and lighter. In reference to the sale of the works to the Council, the Proprietary was prepared to sell at the actual cost of the works plus interest on capital, and as the first fiuaucial year ends early next month, that would be an opportune time for arriving at the amount.

It was decided, on the motion of Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Rimmer, that considering the reasonable reply received from the Gas Coy., their account for lighting last month be paid. Cr Adams stated that a quantity of rubbish had been deposited on the Moutoa Road. He moved that the Sanitary Inspector be instructed to try and find out the person or persons depositing rubbish within the Borough, especially along the Moutoa Road, and report any offenders to the Council. —The motion was seconded by Cr Speirs, and carried. Cr Eevett'brought up the question of cleaning up the Main Street, which he considered was in a disgraceful state.

The Town Clerk said that the matter was to have been attended to that day, but the rain had pre vented the men from working. The Mayor said that the Borough workmen were paid wet and dry days, and he considered they should work in the rain. They could get oilskin coats. Crs Speirs, Gibbs and Adams were of opinion that the men should work as long as the weather was not too bad.

The Mayor said that the workmen would be notified that the Council expects them to work unless it is raining very heavily. Main Street would be attended to at once.

The Council rose at 9.10 p.m,
