BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles, Esq.) and Crs Gibbs, Coley, Ross, Eevett, Speirs, Adams, Robinson, Rimmer. Correspondence was read as follows : From the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, asking for the Council’s co-operation in the matter of having Foxton constituted a port of entry for dutiable goods.—Decided to forward letter to the Minister of Customs, urging that same be dona.

From the Friendly Societies’ Council, Palmerston North, asking for the use of Victoria Park on New Year’s Day, on the same terms as last year.-—Granted. From Foxton Dawn Tennis Club, applying for permission to remove about 400 yards of turf from Norbiton Road, for the purpose of improving their grounds,—■ Decided to inform the Dawn Tennis Club that the Council regrets that they cannot break the rule already made to the effect that in no case will permission be given to take turf from the Borough roads. From R. N. Speirs, notifying that he had renewed the crossing leading to his yard in Main Street with an iron pipe, and asking the Council to make an approach to his gates as promised. From Mrs Thynne, advising that she would be pleased to present to the Council a framed enlarged photo of her late husband (who was the first Mayor of the Borough), to be hung in the Council Chamber.

From the District Engineer, advising that the delay in supplying screened limestone, is due to several large slips in the quarry, but he hopes to be able to supply same within the next two or three weeks. From the Amateur Dramatic Society, asking for permission to hold rehearsals in the Council Chamber. —Granted. From the Foxton Athletic Club, asking that certain repairs be made to the cycle track in Victoria Park, and that the dressing shed recently destroyed .by fire be re-built.-—Decided that the repairs to the track be carried out, but owing to the want of funds, the Council cannot hold out any hope' of rebuilding the shed this year. From A. Eett, asking tor permission to cut 50 square yards of turf from Union Street. —Decided to forward similar reply as Tennis Club. From the -Foxton Horticultural Society, applying for permission to hold meetings in the Council Chamber. —Granted.

The Poundkeeper reported that during last month 11 head of cattle and 17 horses had been impounded by the ranger, and that driving fees amounting to 12s had been collected.

Accounts amounting to ,£294 os 5d were passed for payment. Cr Rimmer was appointed to sign cheques in place of Cr Jenks, resigned. A petition was read from owners of property on the northern side of Thynne Street, asking for the right to acquire portion of the street in order to provide better access to their properties. —It was decided that a meeting of the Council be held on Monday, the 20th instant, to consider the sale of part of the north side of Thynne Street, to residents of same who petition Council for the privilege of buying. The special order passed at the special meeting of the Council held on August 9th, in reference to extension of night soil area was confirmed.

As no reply had been received to the Council’s letter from the Municipal Association of New Zealand, asking for particulars in reference to the proposed superannuation fund for the benefits of employees of Borough Council, etc.,it was decided that a further letter be sent re same. Cr Robinson was appointed a member of the Reserves Cofnmittee. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Gibbs, seconded by Cr Robinson, that all rates unpaid on October 1 st, be sued for without further notice. Only one application was received for the position of ranger, that of James McKnight, at ninepence per head for horses and cattle, and one penny for sheep, which was accepted. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Ross, seconded by Cr Eevett, that the attention of the police be called to the number of people riding bicycles and driving traps at night without lights, and also request them to see that the Council’s by-laws are carried out. The Council rose at 10.5 p.m.
