THE CONTRACT SYSTEM.
The first attempt of a flaxmiller to avail himself of Judge Sim’s recent decision in respect to the Flaxmillers’ Award, took place at a Moutoa mill last week. The miller offered the scutchers contracts at 28s per ton and millbands contracts at 4s per ton on the green leaf. The men, however, realising that by signing they would not only be outside the benefits of the Award, but would also forfeit any claim under the Workers’ Compensation Act, declined to do so. There is another act (The Agricultural Labourers’ Accommodation) which also does not apply to contractors.
At a meeting of the Manawatu Flaxmills’ Employees Union held since, a resolution was passed approving the action of the men in declining to sign.
