THE LATEST NUISANCE.
[To the Editor.]
Sir, —I have been requested by several personal friends to air their grievances, which they have had lately to put up with, under the above heading. I allude to the present condition ot the “gas” which lights up their respective domiciles, and which though deficient partially in the light, amply makes up for it with the “ smell ” in connection with it. The smell that clings about a room is not to be enjoyed ; even when windows are open to let fresh air in, it, like the fragrance of a rose, still hangs round. I have myself enjoyed a few smells since my residence in Foxton, especially when Te Awahou Creek gets pretty dry, but the last article provided for us is a fair “ hummer,” strong enough to kill a buck gutter rat or bring a dead (no nationality mentioned) to life. I am informed that the Borough Council ventilated their opinion pretty strong at their meeting last night; no wonder, seeing that they had to do their business with the lovely perfume hanging all round them. The evening church services on Sunday were somewhat curtailed for the same reason. Some of my friends, unless the nuisance is promptly abated, intend to have their gas cut off, and to resort to kerosene once more, and those who have an acetylene plant on t heir premises will return to that. Further, let me say that if the present state of affairs'continues, the Council can take the necessary steps to have an injunction granted against the Proprietary, preventing them making such a nuisance, which is injurious, and endangers the public health. —Yours etc., Eawrence E. Reade.
